Ebony, on the other hand, is a single species, Diospyros ebenum, known for its dense and hard wood. The rarity of rosewood species, particularly those listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), has driven up their prices significantly. For instance, Brazilian rosewood (Dalbergia nigra) and Madagascar rosewood (Dalbergia baronii) are among the most expensive woods in the world. The demand for rosewood in luxury goods, such as musical instruments, furniture, and decorative items, also contributes to its high cost. Ebony, while still a premium wood, does not command the same prices as rosewood due to its more widespread availability and less stringent legal protections. According to a report by the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO), the average price of rosewood in 2019 was $3,000 to $5,000 per cubic meter, whereas ebony prices ranged from $1,000 to $2,000 per cubic meter.
